Have you ever had goals that you thought were a little outrageous but you knew that someday you had to accomplish them? For me one of those goals was to write a book. I’m not sure why I always had this in my mind. Perhaps one reason was because my father had always talked about doing things; some outlandish, but was often so busy providing for all of us that he didn’t always get the chance. Even though he lived with a debilitating disease for many years he managed to accomplish one of his goals: writing a joke book. This book is now cherished by all those who love him as an amazing remembrance of his life and humor. What a gift it is. He accomplished so many wonderful things in his life and touched so many people’s lives in a positive way yet. I wonder what other things he may have done given the time and chance.
Experiencing my family’s struggles and working with cancer patients as an oncology social worker opened my eyes to the fragility of my life and the importance of living the life I want, right now!! I have accomplished many things over my life and reached many goals and life milestones, but there is more I want to do and some of it is intimidating. Writing a book represented a huge challenge for me in so many ways. It is frightening for me to share my thoughts through my writing and my book was my first step to changing that. The topic came to me quickly when I finally made the decision to take the risk and I brought my years of clinical and personal experiences into the book in what I feel is a personal and heartfelt way. You can see for yourself if you have an interest in reading it. I hope it can have a positive impact on your life as well.
The process of self-publishing and putting my initial work out there quickly turned out to be an important part of the process for me. I needed to just get it out there! I needed to feel I had completed it and took my risk, even if it wasn’t perfect. I needed to get over the final hump. It felt great and I knew I did it.
I savored that feeling of accomplishment for a while. I gave myself time to breathe and think about what I may want to accomplish with this book. I reflected on the process and feel proud of putting myself out there. Although for a while I was content to accept my imperfections, after a short while I decided I needed to improve certain parts of the book; I fixed the layout, the font, added blank pages for writing, accepted more constructive feedback and editing solutions and improved it to the point where I am more satisfied with it. There may be additional improvements. I guess I will see how it goes and what feedback I get. But ultimately I am very happy and proud to have accomplished this goal.
Now I am offering workshops to others using the book as a workbook. I hope to encourage others to take their risks. I strive to continue to be vulnerable and open and experience how others allow themselves to do so and thrive.
Thanks for reading my blog post. If you have any questions about the book, how I self-published it or have an interest in hearing about the workshops please be in touch.
Have an amazing day today!
